Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) officials carried out demolition operations in Kukatpally’s Habeeb Nagar on Friday, targeting encroachments along a 7-metre stretch of a nala.
Acting on complaints from residents, HYDRAA teams dismantled compound walls including one belonging to NRC Garden built over the stormwater channel. Operations began early morning under tight police security to prevent public obstruction. Debris and waste choking the nala were also cleared by civic workers.
The site falls under the Balajinagar division, where rampant unauthorised constructions have obstructed stormwater flow. HYDRAA personnel used earthmovers for several hours to remove illegal structures abutting the drain.
Officials briefed locals at the spot, stating that continued encroachments were contributing to chronic flooding during monsoons. Over the last two decades, large-scale construction on nalas across Hyderabad has disrupted drainage and worsened urban flooding.
Violations have included fencing, foundations, and full structures built directly over drains, despite civic regulations. According to officials, the razed structures in Habeeb Nagar had been obstructing water flow and increasing flood risk.
HYDRAA said the drive would continue in other parts of the city where similar encroachments have been identified.
