Hyderabad: Ameerpet residents finally found relief this year from the flooding that had troubled them every monsoon. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAAA) cleared years of silt from major drains, which ended the recurring waterlogging in the area. On Thursday, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath personally inspected the site and reviewed the ongoing works.
HYDRAA removes blockages and restores smooth water flow
For decades, rainwater from Jubilee Hills, Yousufguda, and Madhuranagar had been flowing down to Ameerpet and stagnating there. Consequently, the main road often went under waist-deep water during every spell of heavy rain. Officials later discovered that six major pipelines were clogged with garbage, mud, and discarded materials accumulated over the years.
To solve the issue, HYDRAA teamed up with GHMC, the Water Board, and the Irrigation Department. Together, the agencies cleared about 45 truckloads of silt, reopening the blocked pipelines. As a result, stormwater has been flowing freely again through the area this season.
Citywide desilting to reduce flooding
Commissioner Ranganath stated that the Ameerpet operation proved how coordination among departments could reduce flooding in many parts of Hyderabad. Moreover, he said that extending similar desilting work to other localities would help prevent monsoon waterlogging across the city.
He also instructed engineers to speed up the remaining drain works in Gayatri Nagar and ensure that the flooding problem does not return next year. Officials informed him that three pipelines were already functional. Even after 10 cm of rainfall this season, no water stagnated in Ameerpet. Once all six pipelines become operational, the system will handle up to 15 cm of rain without trouble.
Meanwhile, residents expressed happiness over HYDRAA’s efforts and thanked the authorities for ending a civic issue that had lasted for decades.
