Hyderabad: To reduce repeated flooding near Maitrivanam and Ameerpet Metro Station, civic body HYDRAA is exploring flood diversion to Krishnakanth Park lake. Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected key flood routes on Monday, following Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s directive to plan both immediate and lasting fixes.
Floodwater bypassing the lake causing Ameerpet gridlock
Ranganath checked drainage lines from Jubilee Hills Road No. 10, Venkatagiri, Rahmathnagar, and Yusufguda. These upstream areas currently send rainwater straight through Madhuranagar to Ameerpet. As a result, the lake at Krishnakanth Park is underutilized, and stormwater stagnates under the metro station due to flat terrain and blocked drains.
Expanding lake capacity to hold rainwater
The Commissioner proposed using the 7-acre lake in Krishnakanth Park as a temporary flood reservoir. Expanding the lake to 12 acres could allow it to hold nearly 120 million litres during heavy rainfall. Releasing the stored water downstream after rain stops could ease waterlogging across Ameerpet.
A 1.1-kilometre box drain currently runs from the lake through Madhuranagar to Ameerpet. However, officials said debris and plastic waste from upstream have clogged the system. Ranganath stressed the need to clear this immediately.
GPRS scan to map underground blocks
To fix bottlenecks under the Ameerpet–Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar stretch, HYDRAA will conduct a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPRS) survey. This scan will help identify silt and hidden blocks in underground pipelines. If clearing them is not possible, new box drains may be built.
Ranganath instructed engineers to maintain clear flow under the metro station. He also asked for a long-term drainage plan alongside temporary relief work. Officials noted that solving issues where floodwater from Madhuranagar crosses near Sarathi Studios could ease most of the local flooding.
