HYDERABAD: HYDRAA has initiated continuous patrols to protect ponds from encroachments and dumping. The agency has identified 70 ponds under threat and implemented 24/7 surveillance, particularly targeting those on the city’s outskirts. Previously, private entities had illegally filled ponds with soil overnight, leading to encroachments. Cases were registered against those using tippers and tractors for such activities, prompting the decision for constant monitoring.
A survey of 549 ponds within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) area was conducted, identifying Full Tank Levels (FTL) and buffer zones. Preliminary notifications were issued for 411 ponds, with final notifications for 138. Plans are underway to finalize notifications for all ponds. Initially, patrols have been established at 70 ponds, with plans to extend this to all ponds within the ORR in the second phase.
Three shifts have been organized to ensure round-the-clock security at these 70 ponds, with two personnel assigned per shift. HYDRAA recruited 400 individuals through outsourcing, focusing on those who narrowly missed qualifying in police constable exams. They underwent three days of training and have been assigned in groups of seven per pond to protect against encroachments. According to Lake Protection Committee Chairman and HYDRA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, patrols have been established as part of pond protection efforts.
He also mentioned plans to identify other ponds at risk of encroachment and implement patrols accordingly.
