Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Authority (HYDRAA) has issued an alert on severe contamination of groundwater around Sunnam Cheruvu in Madhapur, warning that its use poses a public health hazard.
HYDRAA stated that water extracted illegally through borewells near Sunnam Cheruvu was being supplied by tankers to hostels, hotels, and educational institutions, despite testing positive for dangerous metal concentrations.
Tests showed lead and nickel levels exceeding global safety norms, with impacts on memory, mental development, kidneys, liver, and blood pressure, particularly affecting students.
According to the Pollution Control Board, lead was detected at 12 times the permissible limit, cadmium at three times, and nickel at double, raising risks of anemia, bone weakness, skin diseases, liver and kidney damage, and cancer.
Experts warned boiling the water does not remove heavy metals and may worsen toxicity.
HYDRAA has filed cases against those distributing the contaminated water and prioritised cleanup of Sunnam Cheruvu, ranking it first among six polluted lakes in the city.
The restoration project, budgeted at Rs 10 crore, has begun for the 32-acre lake located between Serilingampally and Kukatpally mandals.
