Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for heavy rains in Telangana, warning of extreme rainfall over the next three days. A low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has caused uninterrupted rain in the State for ten days.
The red alert covers Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanamkonda, Mahabubabad, Mulugu, and Warangal. IMD urged residents to stay alert and advised people in low-lying areas to move to safer ground.
Meanwhile, an orange alert is in place for Khammam, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Siddipet, Adilabad, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Suryapet. These districts may see heavy to very heavy rainfall. Additionally, Medak, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Jagitial, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri could face scattered showers.
In Hyderabad, heavy downpour since Sunday evening led to waterlogging in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Khairatabad, Begumpet, and Panjagutta. Floodwaters entered low-lying colonies and blocked key roads, triggering widespread traffic jams.
Although it was a holiday, traffic congestion remained severe. Many two-wheeler riders struggled to move through waterlogged streets. Strong winds caused power cuts in several areas, and broken or non-functional streetlights worsened night travel conditions.
Responding to the crisis, GHMC and SDRF teams launched flood relief and traffic management efforts. They worked to clear drains, pump out water, and assist stranded commuters. The state government asked all district administrations to stay on high alert and step up emergency response measures.
