Hyderabad: A gang posing as police officials duped a Secunderabad-based jeweller of ₹1 crore after promising to sell gold below market price. The accused claimed to be members of the Special Operations Team (SOT) and targeted the owner of RK Jewellery in the area.
Six men arrived at the jeweller’s store dressed as police and offered gold at a rate lower than the prevailing market price. After some negotiation, the jeweller agreed to buy gold worth ₹1 crore. When he asked to see the gold, the gang showed him some jewellery, which he believed to be genuine.
As part of the setup, the fake officials told the jeweller to show the money before proceeding with the deal. The jeweller left for his office in Second Bazaar to collect the cash. While returning with the money, three members of the gang intercepted him. Claiming to be SOT personnel, they stopped him on the way, threatened him, and seized the cash before escaping in a car.
Realising he had been conned, the jeweller lodged a complaint with the local crime police. A search operation led to the arrest of five of the accused near the Jubilee Bus Stop.
Police said the mastermind behind the operation is a constable named Keshav, attached to the 8th Battalion. He remains absconding with the stolen cash. Efforts to trace him are underway.
