Hyderabad: A political rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district turned tragic on Saturday evening when a massive stampede killed at least 31 people and injured over 30 others. The incident occurred during an event addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
Authorities confirmed that among the dead were 16 women, nine men, and six children. State Health Minister M.A. Subramanian provided the figures, adding that the toll could rise as several victims were critically injured.
Crowded Vijay rally sparked Karur rally stampede and deadly chaos
The chaos reportedly began when a nine-year-old girl went missing in the crowd. Vijay, addressing the rally, appealed to police and supporters to help locate her. That announcement triggered panic in the already swelling crowd. In the rush that followed, several attendees collapsed, with many suffering breathing problems.
Witnesses said Vijay immediately stopped his speech and urged the crowd to remain calm. Despite his appeal, panic spread, and the actor-politician later left the stage as the situation worsened.
