HYDERABAD: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha has criticised Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for their absence during the parliamentary debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. Kavitha accused the Gandhi siblings of neglecting their responsibility towards the rights of millions of minorities affected by the bill.
In a statement, Kavitha remarked, “The silence of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi during the Waqf Bill debate speaks volumes. When the people needed voices, the ‘Election Gandhis’ gave them only an absence.” She emphasised that their lack of action reflects performative politics, which the people of Telangana can see through.
Rahul Gandhi had previously expressed opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill through a social media post, describing it as a “weapon” aimed at marginalising Muslims and infringing upon their property rights. He asserted that the bill attacks constitutional principles and sets a precedent for targeting other communities in the future.
Despite his online statements, Gandhi’s absence from the parliamentary debate has drawn criticism. Malayalam daily Suprabhaatham, associated with Congress ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), questioned his non-participation and labelled Priyanka Gandhi’s absence as “a blot.” The publication highlighted the significance of their presence during such critical discussions.
The Congress party has defended its leaders, stating that their absence during the debate is immaterial and pointing out that other senior leaders represented the party’s stance effectively. They also questioned the presence of other political figures during the debate, suggesting that leadership presence is not always indicative of a party’s commitment to an issue.
