Hyderabad: MLC Kavitha on Friday demanded urgent issuance of an ordinance to provide 42% BC reservations in local body elections, warning that any delay or obstruction by the Governor would trigger fresh agitations.
Speaking at her residence in Jubilee Hills, Kavitha said the state cabinet’s decision was a victory for Telangana Jagruthi, United Phule Front, and BC youth. She announced indefinite postponement of the July 17 rail roko protest, following the government’s commitment to pass the BC reservations ordinance.
Kavitha warned that if the Governor withholds assent, similar to conflicts seen in other non-BJP ruled states, mass protests would resume. “Rail and bus services will be brought to a halt again,” she said.
She accused the government of delaying the local elections for 18 months despite having the option to pass the ordinance earlier. “If the government truly intended to provide BC reservations through an ordinance, why wait this long?” she asked.
Questioning the cabinet’s silence on the second bill relating to education and job quotas for BCs, she demanded clarity. “Only the political bill was discussed yesterday. What happened to the education and employment bill?” Kavitha asked.
She criticised both Congress and BJP, accusing them of ignoring backward classes despite pre-poll promises. “SC, ST, BC, minority youth are suffering due to unfulfilled assurances—education, pensions, jobs, and women’s allowances,” she said.
Kavitha also challenged the BJP, saying it could amend the Constitution to ensure legal BC reservations within minutes if it chose to. Despite having two Union ministers from Telangana—including one BC MP—she said the party had failed to act. She urged Union Minister Bandi Sanjay to ensure the BC bill is passed and implemented.
