Kavitha assures support to families displaced by SLBC project

Hyderabad: MLC and Telangana Jagruti president K. Kavitha on Tuesday pledged full support to families displaced by the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project. She blamed successive governments for delaying the irrigation project and neglecting affected communities.

While addressing the media, Kavitha said that although the Nakkalagandi project used the earlier SLBC design, authorities delayed execution for years. Even after Telangana’s formation, they started only 8 km of tunnel work, which later stalled due to technical issues.

Poor planning led to deadly consequences

Kavitha directly held the previous Congress government responsible for ignoring technical flaws in the project. She alleged that this negligence led to an accident that killed eight workers. She added that residents of Nakkalagandi and surrounding villages continue to live in hazardous conditions, while Mothya Thanda villagers remain under severe distress.

Conflict of interest, substandard work alleged

She further alleged that the current contract was awarded to a firm linked to a state minister. According to Kavitha, even minor floods now cause damage due to poor construction quality. She demanded the government complete the project quickly and compensate all displaced families fairly, including those who recently turned 18.

Kavitha criticised the ₹2 lakh compensation given to many families, noting the rise in land prices. “Authorities are pressuring people to surrender their homes at unjust rates. They won’t accept this exploitation,” she warned. She also accused the government of ignoring farmers in Barlapadu Thanda, even after the area was completely submerged.
