Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president and MLC K. Kavitha will travel to Delhi on Tuesday to escalate her campaign demanding Central approval for the 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local body elections, as passed by the Telangana Assembly.
Kavitha is expected to meet several national political leaders during the visit. She is also likely to address a press conference in the national capital to amplify pressure on the Centre to clear the pending BC reservation bills. The Telangana government has sent these bills for presidential assent.
In an effort to mobilise national support, Kavitha has been meeting top leaders from various parties and civil society groups. Her Delhi visit comes ahead of the July 17 rail roko protest planned by Telangana Jagruthi to intensify the demand for BC quotas in local governance.
The campaign gained traction recently when Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale visited Kavitha at her residence in Telangana. During the meeting, Kavitha submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention for Central approval of the reservation bills.
She also reportedly met Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary earlier to build cross-party consensus. Kavitha’s upcoming meetings in Delhi are expected to include more national leaders and Central ministers.
While Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is already in Delhi on his own political engagements, Kavitha’s simultaneous visit has turned the BC quota issue into a significant development in Telangana politics.
