Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has launched a ₹525.36 crore project to build a 17-kilometre retaining wall along both sides of the Munneru river in Khammam. The goal is to eliminate recurring floods during the monsoon.
Khammam Munneru retaining wall to protect city from floods
The wall will stretch 8.5 km each in Khammam Urban and Rural mandals. It will stand 10 to 15 metres high and feature service roads and a modern drainage system. The design allows for 10,000 cusecs of floodwater, with drainage capacities of 379 cusecs on the left bank and 605 cusecs on the right.
A cloudburst in September 2024 had caused flash floods in Khammam. The disaster damaged ₹757 crore worth of public assets and displaced hundreds of families. This project aims to prevent such losses in the future.
Khammam Munneru retaining wall project includes model colony for displaced families
To rehabilitate affected residents, the state is acquiring 245 acres of land. Of this, 106 acres are government-owned. On 139 acres in Polepalli village, officials are developing a model colony. It will provide fully serviced plots to 1,666 displaced families.
Ministers Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and Tummala Nageswara Rao are leading the initiative. Meanwhile, experts from NIT Warangal are conducting quality checks.
Once finished, the project will protect Khammam’s urban, commercial, and farming areas from future floods. It also reflects Telangana’s push toward resilient infrastructure.
