Hyderabad: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Thursday responded to concerns over urea shortage in Telangana, stating that the Centre had already supplied the state’s requirement and extended subsidies worth ₹76,000 crore. He dismissed claims of price hikes and said distribution was the responsibility of the state government.
Speaking to the media, Kishan Reddy said technical issues had affected supply movement but clarified that Telangana’s demand of 20 lakh metric tonnes had been met. “We have supplied 20 lakh metric tonnes of urea and are bringing in another two lakh tonnes. The Centre has never increased urea prices,” he said.
Kishan Reddy blames state for Telangana urea shortage
The minister alleged that confusion created by state leaders led to hoarding and artificial scarcity. “For 11 years there was never a shortage. But repeated claims by Telangana ministers have caused farmers to panic and store fertiliser wherever they find it,” he said.
He also claimed that the Centre had placed adequate stock with the Telangana government, questioning what had happened to the existing supply. He urged the state to ensure proper distribution and prevent misuse.
Kishan Reddy reiterated the Centre’s commitment to farmers, stating that despite global challenges, subsidies were being provided to protect cultivators. He said the timely availability of urea was vital as farmers had taken up sowing following heavy rains.
