Hyderabad: Telangana forest, environment and endowments minister Konda Surekha paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary, recalling his reforms as transformative for her political journey. She garlanded his statue at MGM Center in Warangal on Wednesday before addressing a gathering.
Surekha said her rise in politics was made possible by the women’s reservation introduced in local bodies during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure. “I am proud to say that I could rise to the level of a Minister today because of the vision and reforms brought by Rajiv Gandhi. I became a leader only because of the political reservation given to women in local bodies by him,” she remarked.

Describing him as a “visionary leader,” the minister highlighted his role in advancing computers, telecommunications, youth empowerment, and women’s representation. She said Rajiv Gandhi’s decision to grant voting rights to 18-year-olds empowered youth, while his push for technology led to Hyderabad’s Hi-Tech City.
Surekha urged young people to take inspiration from Rajiv Gandhi’s sacrifice and commitment, saying his reforms left a lasting mark on India’s democracy and development.
