Hyderabad: Former minister and BRS senior leader Koppula Eshwar has held both Congress and BJP responsible for the ongoing urea shortage in Telangana, accusing them of staging political drama while farmers continue to suffer.
Speaking on Friday, Eshwar said that while the sowing season was already a month in, farmers still hadn’t received urea. He alleged that both parties were blaming each other while collectively failing the farming community.
Koppula Eshwar urea crisis Telangana: Farmers left protesting in fields
“Revanth Reddy is lying when he says there is no shortage. Farmers are protesting across the state. In Mahbubnagar, women farmers even stormed a Gromor centre,” Eshwar said. He demanded that the Chief Minister acknowledge the ground reality.
He pointed out that Telangana requires 15 lakh metric tonnes of urea for the monsoon season. However, the Centre allocated only 8.36 lakh tonnes, and just 5 lakh tonnes have arrived so far. He accused the Congress government of lacking foresight and mishandling procurement.
“In KCR’s time, we never had a fertiliser crisis. He would review stock status as early as April or May and ensure buffer stocks were arranged in advance,” Eshwar said.
Calls CM’s claims false, criticises local ministers
He condemned the state government’s decision to use police for fertiliser distribution. “This is not governance. This is chaos,” he said. He mocked the ministers for being clueless, asking whether they were “offering fruits to blind horses.”
He questioned the silence of ministers from the undivided Karimnagar region, especially Laxman Kumar from Peddapalli. “Do these ministers even understand the situation? They are talking without sense,” he said.
Eshwar also challenged the government to procure paddy without the so-called ‘cutting’ weight deduction, if it had the courage and intent to support farmers.
