Kukatpally illicit liquor tragedy claims ninth victim, Jeedimetla on alert

Hyderabad: The death toll in the Kukatpally illicit liquor case rose to nine after a woman undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital succumbed. The victim, identified as Gangamani, had been admitted after consuming adulterated toddy in KPHB Colony on July 8.

Her death follows that of 70-year-old Pedda Gangaram of Sai Charan Colony, who died on Friday, becoming the eighth casualty in the ongoing tragedy.

The spurious brew, allegedly sourced from a local compound, was consumed by residents of Hydernagar and Sai Charan Colony in Kukatpally. Victims began reporting severe illness shortly after consumption, prompting mass hospitalisations.

As of Sunday, 58 people had been admitted to NIMS and Gandhi hospitals with symptoms linked to the contaminated toddy.

In a related development, a fresh incident was reported in Ramreddy Nagar, Jeedimetla, Medchal district, where a couple from Nizamabad exhibited signs of neurological distress after drinking toddy. They were shifted to Gandhi Hospital for evaluation, raising concerns about the spread of contaminated liquor beyond Kukatpally.
