HYDERABAD: Three new cases have been registered against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra at Mumbai’s Khar Police Station in connection with a controversial remark made about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a comedy performance.
According to Mumbai Police, the first complaint was filed by the Mayor of Jalgaon, while the other two complaints were lodged by a hotelier from Nashik and a businessman. The police shared this information on Saturday.
Mumbai Police have already issued two summons to Kamra, asking him to appear on 31 March. Additionally, on 27 March, the Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council accepted a breach of privilege notice against Kamra. The matter has been referred to the Privileges Committee for further proceedings.
However, on Friday, the Madras High Court granted Kunal Kamra anticipatory bail till 7 April. In his petition, Kamra stated that he is a resident of Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu, and if he returns to Mumbai, there is a risk of arrest by Mumbai Police. He also expressed concern over threats to his life from Shiv Sena workers.
The FIRs stem from a parody performed by Kamra during a stand-up comedy show, in which Eknath Shinde was allegedly referred to as a “traitor”. This prompted the filing of police complaints and legal action.
