Solapur, January 27: Maharashtra has reported a suspected first death from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Solapur, though official confirmation is awaited.
According to the state health department, the deceased was a Pune-based worker who had returned to Solapur. He was suspected of suffering from GBS prior to his death.
As of 26 January, the health department has identified 101 active GBS cases across Maharashtra. Pune accounts for the majority with 81 cases, followed by Pimpri-Chinchwad with 14 cases, and six cases reported from other districts. Among the active cases, 68 are men and 33 are women.
The department also revealed that 16 patients in Pune are currently on ventilator support. The first confirmed case of GBS in the state was recorded on 9 January when a patient in Pune tested positive upon hospital admission. Since then, the number of active cases in Pune alone has risen to 101.
The age distribution of patients includes 19 children below the age of nine and 23 individuals aged between 50 and 80 years.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that can lead to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, respiratory complications. The health department continues to monitor the situation closely, providing necessary medical care to affected patients.
