Hyderabad: A man from Mahbubnagar district tried to set himself and his family on fire on Monday after repeated delays in securing inherited land rights.
The incident took place near Ambedkar crossroads, close to the Mahbubnagar bus stand. Shankar, a resident of Baswayapally village in Devarakadra mandal, attempted the act along with his wife and three daughters. Locals at the scene quickly intervened and rescued them. The auto-rickshaw was completely gutted in the fire.
Shankar had been visiting revenue offices for over five years to transfer his grandfather’s land to his name. Though officials issued him an ownership certificate in March, they did not update the records online. Recently, staff at the Devarakadra Tahsildar office told him the land no longer existed in their records.
Distressed, Shankar drove his family to the district centre. He poured petrol over the auto and tried to set it ablaze with his family inside. Bystanders noticed the act in time and saved them.
RDO Naveen responded by promising action against the Tahsildar and revenue inspector. He also said the land record would be corrected online and a new auto would be arranged for the family.
