Hyderabad: A man brutally murdered his pregnant daughter-in-law in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district on Saturday, enraged by her inter-caste marriage with his son.
The attack took place in Gerre village under Dahegam mandal, where the accused, Shivarla Sattayya, allegedly killed 21-year-old Talandi Shravanthi with an axe. She had married Sattayya’s son Shekhar, from the Backward Classes (BC) community, in a temple ceremony at Bellampalli, Mancherial district, a year ago. Shravanthi belonged to a Scheduled Tribe (ST) community.
After the marriage, the couple approached Dahegam police seeking protection. Officers mediated between both families and held counselling with local elders. However, Sattayya and his relatives refused to accept the couple and barred them from entering their home. Since then, Shekhar and Shravanthi had been living with her parents.
On Saturday morning, Shekhar, along with his in-laws, went out to collect firewood. Sattayya seized the opportunity and arrived at Shravanthi’s house. He allegedly attacked her with an axe. Despite her attempt to flee, he chased her down and struck her multiple times on the neck and throat. She died on the spot.
By the time neighbours arrived, Sattayya had fled. The victim’s husband and parents reached the scene in shock and grief. Officials including Kagaznagar DSP Wahiduddin, Rural CI Kumaraswamy, and Tahsildar Munawar Sharif visited the spot.
Based on a complaint by Shravanthi’s father, Talandi Chennayya, police registered a case against Sattayya, his relative Kumar, and co-daughter-in-law Kavitha. Sattayya has since been taken into police custody.
