HYDERABAD: In a shocking case of dowry-related violence, a pregnant woman died after being forced to consume pesticide-laced cool drink by her husband in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.
The victim, Islavat Deepika (19), from Regulatanda in Dasutanda panchayat under Tekulapalli mandal, had married Boda Srinu from Venkatayathanda Stage six months ago. Their married life had been smooth initially, but tensions escalated when Deepika became three months pregnant.
For the past two months, Deepika had been facing harassment from her husband, in-laws, and sisters-in-law, who pressured her to bring additional dowry.
On the afternoon of the 24th of this month, a heated argument broke out, during which Deepika was assaulted by her husband and his family members. Later that evening, Srinu allegedly mixed pesticide and rat poison into a cool drink and forced Deepika to consume it. He then drank the poisoned beverage himself.
After the family became aware of the incident, both Deepika and Srinu were shifted to Khammam for treatment. Deepika, however, succumbed while undergoing medical care, while Srinu’s condition remains critical.
Following a complaint filed by Deepika’s father, Vatmal, the police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
