Hyderabad: Heavy rains and inflows from upstream Karnataka projects have caused severe crop damage in Zaheerabad, as floodwaters from the Manjeera river overflowed into farmlands across several villages. Farmers reported total losses as the backwaters submerged standing crops in more than 500 acres.
Due to the rising water levels, the backflow from the Singur project entered agricultural fields in Hussain Nagar, Chikurthy, Ameerabad, Murtuzapur, Chalki, and Raghavapur villages. The affected crops include cotton, red gram, green gram, and black gram.
Farmers expressed anguish as water stagnation destroyed their crops just weeks after sowing. Many said they had taken loans to invest in the season’s cultivation and now face total financial loss. “We borrowed money, invested in inputs, and watched our fields drown right before our eyes,” one farmer said.
Local cultivators estimate that the flooding has wiped out crops in over 500 acres, leaving them with no returns on their investment. They are urging the Telangana government to immediately assess the damage and provide compensation for the losses caused by the Manjeera floodwaters.
