HYDERABAD: A fierce Maoists encounter unfolded on the Telangana–Chhattisgarh border, with intense gunfire exchanged between security forces and Maoist insurgents for several hours. Reports suggest that the Maoists, while retreating, were moving towards the forests of Karregutta.
The incident occurred in the border area of Bhadradri Kothagudem district after intelligence reports indicated the presence of Maoists. As a joint team of police and security personnel launched a combing operation, they were suddenly fired upon, prompting a strong retaliation from the forces.
Sources said a large group of Maoists, armed with sophisticated weapons, was present in the area. Following the exchange of fire, they fled towards hilly and forested terrain. Tension prevails in Karregutta and surrounding villages, with locals living under a cloud of fear.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far, but a massive search operation is underway. Police have declared a high alert in Karregutta, Peerlapalli, and nearby areas, advising residents to remain indoors.
Both state and central security forces have dispatched reinforcements to cut off the Maoists’ escape routes. Surveillance using drones and other advanced equipment has been deployed to monitor their movements.
The encounter comes amid a resurgence of Maoist activity in Telangana’s border regions, prompting ongoing operations by security agencies to maintain law and order.
