Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRAA) commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Wednesday announced that the 7.5-km drain stretching from Masab Cheruvu to Peddamberpet will be developed as a model for flood prevention and drainage infrastructure.
The commissioner, accompanied by Ibrahimpatnam MLA Mal Reddy Rangareddy, inspected flood-affected zones in Jalikhunta, Dilawarkhan, and surrounding colonies. He noted that several localities between Masab Cheruvu and Dilawarkhan lack a proper stormwater drain, causing repeated waterlogging during monsoon.
“Now is the time to widen the nala with proper dimensions, before more residential development takes place,” Ranganath said. He stressed that coordination meetings would be held with departments including Revenue, GHMC, and Irrigation to draft a comprehensive action plan.
He reviewed stalled double-bedroom housing projects in Jalikhunta where groundwater inflow has affected cellar construction. Ranganath said all connecting stormwater drains between lakes must be fully upgraded to mitigate future floods.
Inspecting areas like Karmanghat and Badangigipet, he identified obstructions affecting nala expansion. In Udaynagar Colony, Karmanghat, he directed officials to begin nala widening immediately. He also reviewed overflow points and bund conditions at Raviryala lake, where upstream homes face inundation risk.
Ranganath warned against further lake encroachments and said action would be taken against those dumping soil into water bodies. “Only by preserving lakes and drains can we prevent future flooding,” he said.
