Hyderabad: Bus operations at Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) resumed on Sunday morning after floodwaters from the Musi River receded. RTC staff cleared the mud and debris left by the flood, restoring normalcy.
Flooding on Saturday forced authorities to suspend services at MGBS. As a temporary measure, buses were rerouted from Aramghar, LB Nagar, Uppal, and JBS. With water levels falling, buses are now departing again from MGBS, bringing relief to passengers.
Authorities confirmed that traffic resumed at 11 am, ending nearly 36 hours of disruption. RTC officials said services to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had also restarted from MGBS. The premises had been submerged after Musi overflowed due to excess inflow from the twin reservoirs.
MGBS bus services resume after major rainfall in catchment areas
This situation followed rare and intense rainfall in the catchment areas of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar. Vikarabad alone recorded 15 cm of rain over two days. Tharur received 12.5 cm, Shahbad 11.83 cm, and several other areas recorded over 10 cm.
Due to limited storage capacity and both reservoirs already being at full tank level, Metro Water Board officials opened nearly all gates. This led to heavy discharge into Musi, flooding low-lying areas, colonies, and MGBS.
Residents noted that such severe flooding hadn’t occurred in the last three decades. Upper catchment regions like Janwada, Shankarpally, Moinabad, and Marpally experienced days of heavy rainfall, adding to the inflows and triggering the flood.
