Hyderabad: The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken note of large-scale irregularities in the issuance of birth and death certificates by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), prompting a central-level alert and a formal probe.
According to official sources, the Intelligence Bureau has flagged the issue to the state administration and directed GHMC to enforce tighter protocols in document issuance. The Bureau has reportedly sought a detailed report on all certificates issued so far to Rohingyas and other foreign nationals.
Serious allegations have surfaced accusing GHMC officials of issuing falsified birth and death documents not just to local residents but also to unauthorised recipients. Intelligence findings indicate that over 25,000 such certificates may have been issued illegally across various GHMC circles, including Charminar and Mehdipatnam. Thousands of these were death certificates.
Authorities have since identified and cancelled the fraudulent documents. Instructions have also been issued to prevent further misuse and to scrutinise current practices.
