HYDERABAD, February 13: Minister Konda Surekha appeared before the Special Judge at Nampally Special Court on Thursday in connection with a defamation case filed by actor Akkineni Nagarjuna. The case pertains to remarks made by Surekha involving Nagarjuna’s family and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR).
Specifically, Surekha had alleged that KTR was responsible for the separation of actors Samantha and Naga Chaitanya, comments that garnered significant attention.
In response to these statements, both Nagarjuna and KTR filed separate defamation suits against Minister Surekha. Nagarjuna contended that Surekha’s remarks caused considerable distress to his family and tarnished their longstanding reputation in the film industry. He urged the court to initiate criminal proceedings against her.
Nagarjuna’s legal representative, Ashok Reddy, highlighted in court that after making the contentious comments, Surekha issued an apology on Twitter. He argued that, given her ministerial position, such remarks were inappropriate and had deeply affected Nagarjuna’s family, warranting criminal action.
Following statements from witnesses, including Nagarjuna and KTR, the court summoned Minister Surekha to provide an explanation for her comments. Complying with the summons, Surekha appeared in court accompanied by her lawyer, Gurupreet Singh.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for 19 February 2025, where further proceedings will take place.
