HYDERABAD: The Telangana government is set to host the prestigious Miss World 2025 pageant, with the Tourism and Culture Department leading the organisation. The event has, however, become a topic of political and administrative discussion following the sudden transfer of IAS officer Smita Sabharwal from her role as Principal Secretary of the department.
Sabharwal, who was closely overseeing preparations for the international event, was recently reassigned and replaced by senior IAS officer Jayesh Ranjan. Her exit, coupled with a cryptic tweet quoting the Bhagavad Gita about karma, triggered speculation about internal developments surrounding the event’s management.
In a recent media interview, Jayesh Ranjan downplayed the controversy, stating that the Miss World pageant would proceed smoothly under his leadership. “It is a misconception to think that without one officer, nothing can move forward,” he said, affirming that he has decades of experience handling high-profile international events.
Ranjan cited his involvement in major global summits, including events attended by Ivanka Trump, Tony Blair’s delegation, and representatives from over 90 countries. He also pointed out that he previously served as Tourism Secretary for four years and is well-acquainted with the domain.
“Smita Sabharwal did good work, no doubt. But it’s not as if events will stall in her absence,” Ranjan clarified. He has also been appointed as Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
Meanwhile, Smita Sabharwal has been posted as a member of the Telangana State Finance Commission. Despite the reassignment, she continues to draw public support and attention, especially from those who appreciated her approach to administrative transparency and high-profile event planning.
The Telangana government remains confident in hosting Miss World 2025 with grandeur, aiming to place the state prominently on the global tourism and cultural map.
