Hyderabad: Assembly Speaker holds the final constitutional authority to decide on the disqualification of 10 MLAs who won on the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) ticket but later joined the Congress, Minister Sridhar Babu said, addressing a press meet today in Karimnagar. He noted that the Supreme Court had given the Speaker three months to rule on such defections, adding that the government had no role in the matter.
He said the Justice Chandra Ghosh Commission had submitted its final report on irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project. A brief committee had studied the report in detail and prepared a short version, with key findings already made public. The government would soon table the Kaleshwaram report in the Assembly and allow all parties, including BRS, to speak on it. Based on members’ views and the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) report, the government would determine the next course of action.
Kaleshwaram report to be tabled in Assembly soon, says minister
Sridhar Babu said measures would be taken to prevent a repeat of incidents like the Medigadda barrage damage. On the phone-tapping case, he stated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) was working independently and would decide on summoning individuals for questioning. He reiterated the Congress government’s commitment to the welfare of Backward Classes and said local body elections would be held with 42 percent reservations for BCs.
