Monsoon floods kill 366 in Himachal, damage worth trillions

Hyderabad: The monsoon floods have wreaked devastation across northern India, claiming 366 lives in Himachal Pradesh since July 24. The state government reported property losses valued at ₹4 lakh crore.

Shimla recorded 116 per cent excess rainfall while Kullu registered 113 per cent, both double the seasonal average. The heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods, compounding the crisis in the hill state.

Punjab remains badly hit, with all 23 districts still under flood impact. Though the meteorological department forecast no rainfall alerts for the next three days, concerns remain over Ludhiana’s Sarsari dam, which is under severe strain.

In Uttarakhand, a cloudburst struck Naugaon in Uttarkashi on Saturday evening, sending water and debris into homes and markets and sweeping away parked vehicles.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, the Yamuna river swelled dangerously near Mathura, advancing a kilometre into the city. Water filled ashrams up to five feet and submerged the Vrindavan Parikrama Marg.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit flood-affected areas on September 9.
