Hyderabad: The Musi river flood reached historic levels in Hyderabad after several days of relentless rainfall, submerging low-lying areas and triggering emergency evacuations across the city.
Musi river surges to 13 feet near Purana Pul
At the Purana Pul point, the river rose to 13 feet its highest level in 30 years. Officials confirmed that such a rise had not been recorded in three decades. As a result, several neighborhoods were inundated, with residents trapped and multiple temples flooded.
Floodwaters surrounded a temple near Purana Pul, leaving a priest and four family members stranded. GHMC and Hyderabad Disaster Response Force teams responded quickly. They delivered food supplies and used a crane to relocate the group to a safer location.
Floodwater forces shutdown of MGBS and key roads
Flooding affected two bridges leading to the MGBS bus station, prompting its temporary closure. Streets in Gowlipura and Gode Ki Kabar were also submerged. Consequently, rescue personnel had to use ropes to evacuate stranded passengers, as platforms inside the station were under water.
Meanwhile, traffic came to a halt at Chaderghat when water overflowed onto the mini-bridge. This caused extensive congestion in surrounding areas for several hours.
Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reach full capacity
Both Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar lakes exceeded their storage limits due to heavy inflow. Authorities opened 15 gates at Osman Sagar up to 9 feet and 11 gates at Himayat Sagar up to 6 feet. This move significantly increased downstream water levels in the Musi river.
Flooding soon spread to Ramdev Guda, Langer Houz, Ziaguda, and localities around Purana Pul. GHMC and police advised residents to stay away from the river. A temple near Bapu Ghat was nearly fully submerged, while the adjacent cremation ground was completely underwater.
Infrastructure damage reported across zones
At Moosarambagh, the river’s speed intensified. Authorities shut the main road leading to Dilsukhnagar. Water levels on the old Moosarambagh bridge climbed to 10 feet, sweeping away construction materials from the nearby under-construction bridge.
Vehicles bound for Warangal lined up along Uppal Ring Road, stuck in hours-long traffic jams. In Karwan, floodwater breached the premises of the historic Ganesh temple. Local MLA Kausar Mohiuddin visited the temple to assess the situation.
Officials urge public caution amid ongoing risk
Officials warned that continued inflows into Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar could further raise the Musi river level. As a precaution, authorities closed service roads near Narsingi and Himayat Sagar and barred public access.
Throughout the city, GHMC teams, police, and rescue units remained engaged in response efforts to limit damage and protect lives.
