HYDERABAD: As summer intensifies, authorities at Nehru Zoological Park have started implementing measures to protect animals from extreme heat while also ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors.
Zoo officials are adapting to seasonal changes by installing palm-thatched shelters, sprinklers, coolers, and air conditioning units in enclosures to maintain suitable temperatures. The zoo hospital area is also being equipped with cooling mechanisms to safeguard the well-being of the animals.
Under the supervision of Zoo Curator Vasantha, special efforts are being made to set up shaded enclosures for lions, tigers, snakes, crocodiles, and deer. Some of the older thatched roofs are being replaced with fresh green palm leaves, while additional cooling measures such as air conditioners and water baths are being installed, particularly for elephants and big cats.
Early Start to Summer Preparations
Typically, these summer arrangements begin in April, but due to the early onset of heat in March, officials have already launched the cooling initiatives.
As the summer season usually brings a surge in visitor footfall, special arrangements are also being made to provide shaded areas and minimize heat exposure around ticket counters and enclosures. This year, considering the intense summer conditions, extra precautions are being taken in advance.
Authorities have prioritized completing these installations swiftly to ensure both animal welfare and visitor comfort, while also focusing on environmentally friendly solutions.
