Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will hold two days of rights violation hearings in Hyderabad on July 28 and 29, reviewing 109 cases from Telangana.
NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, members Justice (Dr) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Ms. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani will lead the open hearings at the Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resource Development Institute in Jubilee Hills. Proceedings begin at 10 AM on Monday, with complainants and relevant state officials summoned for in-person review.
NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal, Director General (Investigation) R.P. Meena, Registrar (Law) Joginder Singh, and other senior officials will also attend.
The cases span a range of violations: police abuse, denial of social welfare benefits, irregularities in prisons, and neglect of the rights of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Complaints also include issues affecting schoolchildren, maternal health challenges faced by pregnant and nursing women, and illegal transport practices.
On July 29, the Commission will meet senior officials of the Telangana government to discuss systemic rights issues and push for faster redress for victims. NHRC will assess state compliance with its previous directives and examine welfare steps taken by departments and agencies.
At 2 PM that day, NHRC will also hold consultations with civil society organisations, NGOs, and human rights defenders to gather inputs on human rights concerns across Telangana.
A press briefing is scheduled for 3:30 PM on Tuesday to present outcomes of the rights violation hearings and outline actions taken.
Since 2007, NHRC has conducted similar public hearings across several states to expedite justice in human rights violation cases. The most recent session in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, was held last week and reported effective outcomes. Past hearings have been held in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
