Hyderabad: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has completed 100 kidney transplants within just six months, including four robot-assisted procedures, setting a national benchmark in transplant surgery.
The state-run hospital now ranks among India’s top centres for renal transplantation. All surgeries were conducted under the Aarogyasri scheme, ensuring free treatment for economically disadvantaged patients.
NIMS, which began performing kidney transplants in 1989, saw a sharp rise in surgeries under the leadership of Dr. Ram Reddy, who took charge in 2015. Alongside senior professor Dr. Rahul Devraj, the department has conducted over 1,000 procedures in the last decade.
“This year has been especially significant—we completed 100 transplants in just half a year,” Dr. Ram Reddy said on Tuesday. Dr. Devraj added that the team performs over 1,000 urology-related procedures monthly and has conducted more than 350 robotic surgeries in the past 24 months.
During the previous BRS administration, the state invested in advanced medical equipment and expanded access to complex surgeries under Aarogyasri. With around 90% of NIMS patients from low-income backgrounds, the hospital has emerged as a critical lifeline, delivering corporate-level care at no cost.
