Hyderabad: Doctors at NIMS have performed a rare double surgery to treat a man suffering from life-threatening lung and heart conditions, offering what they described as a second chance at life.
Rachakonda Shivaprasad Rao, from Kachchapur village in Koheda mandal of Karimnagar district, had been grappling with serious lung and heart problems for quite some time. After trying several hospitals without much improvement, he finally turned to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for answers.
Tests at NIMS painted a clearer—and more troubling—picture. Doctors diagnosed him with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and tricuspid regurgitation, two complex conditions that put intense pressure on the heart and severely limit blood flow.
A team led by Prof. Dr. Amresh, head of the cardiothoracic surgery department, and Associate Professor Dr. Surya Satya Gopal performed two back-to-back surgeries to address the complications. Hospital officials said the procedures would normally cost several lakhs at private or corporate hospitals, but were conducted entirely free of charge under the Aarogyasri scheme.
Doctors said the patient is recovering steadily.
