Hyderabad: Irrigation authorities opened seven crest gates of the Nizamsagar project at midnight on Sunday, releasing 58,500 cusecs of floodwater into the Manjeera River. The move followed heavy inflows from the upper catchment after several days of continuous rainfall.
Officials reported that the reservoir had received nearly 75,000 cusecs of inflows. With the water level nearing full capacity, they released the water to ease pressure on the dam.
Nizamsagar project gates lifted as storage nears full level
The full reservoir level of Nizamsagar stands at 1,405 feet (17.802 TMC), while current storage measures 1,403.25 feet (15.323 TMC). Officials alerted Jukkal MLA Tota Laxmi Kanth Rao, who arrived at the site and joined engineers in offering prayers to the river goddess Gangamma before initiating the gate operation.
Authorities warned villagers, farmers, and herders to stay away from streams, canals, and flooded rivulets. Long-dry channels now carry strong flows, posing a serious threat to those living nearby.
Irrigation Executive Engineer Solomon, Congress leader Sai Patel, AEE Shivaprasad, AE Saketh, and SI Shivakumar also visited the site during the discharge.
