Hyderabad: Heavy rains across Telangana and upstream catchments triggered massive inflows into the Nizamsagar project in Kamareddy district. Authorities opened 11 floodgates on Wednesday morning.
Irrigation officials said the project received 82,306 cusecs of inflows. The reservoir level stood at 1,404.96 feet against the full reservoir level of 1,405 feet. It currently holds 17.788 TMC of water, close to its total capacity of 17.802 TMC.
Assistant Engineer Saketh said the project released 1,06,161 cusecs downstream into the Manjeera River. Another 2,100 cusecs flowed into the main canal.
Nizamsagar project gates lifted, public alerted
With streams and rivulets overflowing, authorities warned farmers, herders, and villagers to stay away from low-lying areas. They also urged residents not to enter canals or cross flooded stretches.
Officials advised tourists to maintain caution while visiting Nizamsagar. They asked visitors to avoid floodgates and downstream areas due to strong currents.
Steady rainfall since Tuesday night across northern Telangana caused the surge in inflows. Irrigation authorities said they are monitoring the situation round-the-clock. Further gate operations will depend on rainfall patterns in catchment areas.
With the reservoir almost full, officials stressed that public safety remains their top priority. They urged citizens to follow warnings issued by the irrigation and police departments.
