Hyderabad: Online betting has once again cast a dark shadow over Telangana, claiming the life of a 29-year-old painter who found himself unable to escape the lure of easy money.
The tragedy unfolded in Medak district, where Dilip Kumar, a resident of Medak town, became heavily involved in online betting platforms, hoping for quick gains. However, the addiction turned fatal as he ended up losing nearly ₹2 lakh, pushing him deeper into debt.
Unable to repay the borrowed money, Dilip reportedly decided to take his own life. Police said he leapt into the Gosmudram tank, where his lifeless body was later recovered by local residents. Authorities have registered a case and begun investigations.
Police sources said they had repeatedly warned the public about the dangers of online betting, which continues to ensnare unsuspecting youth in a vicious cycle of debt and despair. Despite such warnings, many young people remain drawn to these platforms, risking not just their finances but also their lives.
Dilip’s tragic death highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement and more robust awareness campaigns to curb the growing menace of online betting. The police have urged the community to stay vigilant and seek help at the first signs of gambling addiction.
