Hyderabad: The Telangana government has moved to digitise the process for issuing new auto rickshaw permits across the state, making online application mandatory, including in the Greater Hyderabad area.
According to the Transport Department, applications will now be accepted only through its official website. Officials will scrutinise each application online, and only those meeting all eligibility conditions will receive formal permits. The department said the step aims to curb fraudulent practices, including black marketing and illegal resale of permits.
Past permit allotments had drawn criticism, with allegations that certain dealers and financiers acquired bulk permits using benami applicants, creating artificial scarcity and inflating vehicle prices. Auto drivers were reportedly charged high interest rates, pushing many into financial distress.
Under the new system, applicants must be residents of Greater Hyderabad and provide valid identity and address proof such as Aadhaar. Only individuals holding either a three-wheeler or light motor vehicle driving licence will be eligible.
A single-driver, single-permit rule is being strictly enforced. The department is attempting to prevent repeat instances where multiple permits were previously issued against the same name, address, or licence.
The Transport Department said that all applications will undergo online verification. A clear process has been established to ensure fair distribution and eliminate scope for irregularities.
Officials have stated that the current round of allotments will maintain complete transparency, and any form of malpractice or corruption will not be tolerated.
