HYDERABAD: A heated debate erupted in the Telangana Assembly after BJP Legislature Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy proposed renaming Osmania University after renowned writer Suravaram Prathapa Reddy. His statement came during a heated discussion over the government’s decision to rename Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had earlier announced the decision to rename Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in honor of Suravaram Prathapa Reddy, recognizing his contributions to Telangana’s literary and journalistic heritage. However, Alleti Maheshwar Reddy strongly opposed this move, arguing that Potti Sreeramulu was a national icon who fought relentlessly for linguistic rights and social justice.
Countering the government’s decision, the BJP leader questioned, “If Suravaram Prathapa Reddy deserves such recognition, why not rename Osmania University instead?” His remarks intensified the political divide, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling party of sidelining historical figures for regional appeasement.
The renaming controversy has sparked widespread debate, with supporters arguing that honoring local figures strengthens Telangana’s identity, while critics warn against diminishing the legacy of national leaders like Potti Sreeramulu.
With mounting political tensions, this proposal is expected to remain a key issue in the state’s political landscape.
