HYDERABAD: The historic Pandava Mound located in Huzurabad area of Karimnagar district, Telangana, is deteriorating rapidly due to official apathy and public indifference. Traditionally believed to be associated with the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, the site is now on the verge of disappearing.
Once regarded as a centre of archaeological, cultural, and spiritual significance, the ancient mound has now been reduced to a neglected spot littered with garbage, encroachments, and suffering from severe erosion. Local residents pointed out that there is neither a protective wall nor any signage to denote the site’s historical importance.
According to historians and archaeologists, the site holds considerable potential for academic research. Past excavations have uncovered ancient pottery, terracotta figurines, and other cultural artefacts. However, the State Department of Archaeology has taken no concrete steps for its preservation, and no initiatives have been made to develop it as a tourist destination.
In recent weeks, local social activists and school students staged protests demanding action to safeguard the site, but the concerned authorities have remained silent.
Cultural organisations have appealed to the government to list the Pandava Mound as a protected archaeological site and allocate funds for its conservation and development. They emphasised that preserving the mound is crucial to ensure that future generations remain connected to their historical roots.
