HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at the Telangana Secretariat on Thursday as part-time lecturers from universities across the state staged a protest demanding job security and amendments to Government Order (GO) 21.
The lecturers raised slogans against the government and attempted to enter the Secretariat premises, prompting police intervention. A heated exchange occurred between the protesters and the police, leading to a brief scuffle. The demonstrators were subsequently detained and transported from the site in police vans.
The lecturers demanded that the government provide them with job security and ensure weightage for part-time teaching experience in upcoming recruitment processes. They expressed concern that the implementation of GO 21, which pertains to the recruitment of regular teaching staff in universities, would result in the loss of their existing part-time positions.
Protesters highlighted that there are around 900 part-time lecturers working across universities in Telangana. They warned that their families would face severe hardships if their employment were terminated due to the regularisation of teaching posts under the current provisions of GO 21.
They urged the government to give top priority to part-time lecturers during recruitment and called for an immediate revision of the GO to protect their livelihoods.
Part-time lecturers have been staging statewide protests for several days, expressing their opposition to GO 21 and pressing for a more secure and inclusive recruitment policy.
