Hyderabad, January 27: A petition has been filed in the High Court against the Indiramma Aatmiya Bharosa scheme, which was launched by the Congress government yesterday. The petitioner, G. Srinivas from Narayanpet, challenged the scheme’s exclusion of urban agricultural workers.
The Indiramma Aatmiya Bharosa scheme, introduced by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s government, is designed to provide financial support of ₹12,000 annually to agricultural workers without land holdings. The petitioner argued that the scheme is only applicable to workers in rural areas and does not extend to those in urban municipalities. He pointed out that over 800,000 agricultural workers live in 129 urban municipalities, who are being left out of the benefits.
The petitioner’s lawyer contended that the exclusion of urban workers violates the principle of equality, as agricultural workers, regardless of location, should be treated equally. He argued that limiting the scheme to rural areas goes against the principles established by the Supreme Court.
In response, the Chief Justice’s bench has directed the state government to make a decision regarding the inclusion of urban agricultural workers under the scheme within four weeks. The government has been instructed to issue orders in this regard to the Chief Secretary within the specified time frame.
