Hyderabad: Minister for Revenue and Housing Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has instructed officials to accelerate the repair works on the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Main Canal Under Tunnel (UT) in Khammam district, setting a firm deadline of July 10 to ensure timely irrigation for the upcoming monsoon season.
The directive came during an unannounced inspection on Friday at the construction site in Jujjularaopet village, Kusumanchi mandal. The minister’s visit aimed to assess the progress and reinforce the urgency of the project, which is critical for providing water to nearly four lakh acres of agricultural land in the region.
The UT section of the canal, which channels irrigation water from the Paleru reservoir, suffered a breach in September last year due to heavy rainfall. Temporary repairs were made at the time to minimise disruptions for farmers.
Permanent restoration work is now underway, with a sanctioned budget of ₹14.20 crore. Once completed, the repairs are expected to restore irrigation coverage to vast stretches of farmland, including 1.33 lakh acres in the Paleru constituency alone.
To meet the tight timeline, Ponguleti has instructed officials to work in two shifts per day if required. He stressed the importance of completing the project before the onset of the monsoon to safeguard the agricultural prospects of thousands of farmers across Khammam. (NSS)
