Hyderabad: Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday said the 42% BC reservation was granted with consensus from all political parties and would not affect the rights of other communities.
He was addressing a press conference at the MLA camp office in Miryalaguda. The Minister stated that the Telangana Government conducted a caste-based survey as part of inclusive governance. He said the BC quota aligns with Rahul Gandhi’s slogan, “Jiski jitni abadi, uski utni hissedari.”
Ponnam clarified that SC, ST, and EBC groups would not face any harm from the enhanced quota. “The proposal received public and political support. It was then sent to the President via the Governor,” he said.
He also questioned critics who now cite the 50% cap. “Why were they silent when 10% reservation was given to upper castes?” he asked. He added that the reservation system is based on population and rotation, without political motives.
Telangana to issue local body poll notification soon
Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the government will soon issue a notification for local body elections. He accused BRS and BJP of resorting to smear politics instead of focusing on public welfare.
He said the government set up 12 relief camps for rain-hit citizens and relocated affected families to safer zones. To assist commuters, four special bus stations were also opened.
He appealed to BJP and BRS to set aside political attacks during natural calamities and join the government’s efforts. “All parties must stand with the people in such times,” he said.
Later, the Minister made a surprise visit to the Miryalaguda bus stand. He announced special funding for its development. Local MLA Lakshma Reddy and other leaders joined the inspection.
