HYDERABAD: Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar staged a sit-in protest at Ambedkar Chowk in Husnabad on Wednesday, opposing the inclusion of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s names in the Enforcement Directorate’s chargesheet in the National Herald case.
Joined by hundreds of Congress workers from various wings of the party, Prabhakar sat on the road for nearly an hour to express solidarity with the Gandhis. The protest was part of a broader campaign by the Congress, which has described the ED chargesheet against Gandhis as a politically motivated move by the BJP-led Central government.
Addressing the crowd, Prabhakar said that the decision to revive the National Herald case came shortly after the recent All India Congress Committee meeting in Ahmedabad, where the party resolved to launch a mass movement against the BJP. He claimed that, fearing the momentum building against it, the Modi government reactivated the case and had the names of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi added to the chargesheet through the ED.
He accused the BJP of harassing Sonia Gandhi, stating that the party was targeting her despite her age – she is now 85 years old – by filing what he described as baseless and illegal cases. He alleged that this was part of a broader tactic to suppress the Congress leadership, especially with the BJP expected to suffer electoral losses in Gujarat.
Prabhakar also criticised the government’s selective action, pointing out that several industrialists who had allegedly defrauded the country of crores of rupees continued to escape punishment.
