Hyderabad: Telangana IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu on Wednesday said prisons must become centres of hope and reform instead of remaining places of despair. He made the remarks at the Cultural Night of the 7th All India Prison Duty Meet – 2025, held at the RBVRR Telangana Police Academy.
He stressed that correctional facilities should focus on rehabilitation and reintegration. “Rehabilitation of inmates is not merely the responsibility of the prisons department; it is a collective social responsibility,” he said.
Sridhar Babu pushes for prison reforms
The Minister praised the Telangana Prisons Department, calling it a model for other States. He noted that prisons hold inmates from different regions, religions, and cultures. Reform programmes, he said, must be tailored to these varied circumstances.
Highlighting technology’s role, he said the government was introducing digital education, skill training, healthcare, and mental health support for inmates. These steps, he added, would help prisoners return to society with dignity.
Senior officials attend the meet
Several senior officers joined the event. Among them were Soumya Mishra, Director General of Prisons; Harichandan, Hyderabad Collector; Narayana Reddy, Ranga Reddy Collector; and Avinash Mohanty, Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad.
