NDA candidate wins by 152-vote margin
Radhakrishnan, the NDA nominee, was elected Vice President on September 9. He secured 452 votes against opposition candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy’s tally, winning by a margin of 152 votes.
According to Rajya Sabha Secretary General and Election Officer P.C. Modi, 767 of 781 MPs cast their ballots, recording a turnout of 98.2%. Of the votes, 752 were valid while 15 were invalid. NDA had the support of 427 MPs, but 11 YSRCP members also backed Radhakrishnan.
Thirteen MPs abstained, including seven from Biju Janata Dal (BJD), four from Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), one from Shiromani Akali Dal, and one independent. Officials said Radhakrishnan polled 14 votes more than expected, sparking speculation of cross-voting in the opposition camp.
Resigns as Maharashtra Governor before oath
Ahead of assuming office, Radhakrishnan resigned from his post as Governor of Maharashtra. Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed his resignation in an official statement. President Murmu handed additional charge of Maharashtra to Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat.
Radhakrishnan, a senior NDA leader, is expected to play a key role in managing Rajya Sabha proceedings and strengthening Centre–state relations during his tenure.
