HYDERABAD: BJP MP Raghunandan Rao has appealed to the Union Ministry of Defence to ensure that the 67% local quota for Telangana students in Andhra Pradesh Sainik Schools is retained for the ongoing academic year. In a video statement released on Monday, the MP expressed concern over recent directives from the Defence Ministry that reportedly exclude Telangana students from this quota.
According to Raghunandan Rao, between 25,000 and 30,000 students from Telangana appeared for the entrance examination this year, aspiring for admission into Sainik Schools across Andhra Pradesh. He stated that the Ministry’s latest orders have effectively removed Telangana students from the 67% local category that has been in place for the past decade.
Highlighting the impact on aspirants, Raghunandan Rao said he had spoken directly with Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, to request an immediate review. He has secured an appointment with the minister and plans to meet him in person, accompanied by parents of affected students.
Raghunandan Rao has also urged the Centre to approve three new Sainik Schools in Telangana to address the long-term demand. Until such institutions are established, he requested that Telangana students who appeared for this year’s entrance exam continue to benefit from the existing quota.
He claimed that the minister responded positively to the appeal and expressed hope that a resolution would be reached. The MP added that a delegation of parents and students would meet the minister on Tuesday evening in Delhi.
